Like a Child by Kelly Martin

Would you do it with a six-year-old sitting next to you?

A friend’s husband, a preacher, was watching a television program and his young son told him that a preacher shouldn’t watch such shows. It convicted the father, and he changed the channel.

That tends to be the ‘bad’ part of having kids. They will tell you the honest truth, and they will also dutifully let you know when you break the rules.

Recently while looking at videos on YouTube, I clicked on one that I shouldn’t have. It was a television program that I watched a few years ago but don’t any more. I thought I’d click the link to see what my former favorites were up to. I knew I shouldn’t be looking at it, but I let my curiosity get the best of me. All of a sudden, my six year old came barging in, wanting to know what I was doing. I got defensive, embarrassed, and told her to leave. I didn’t want her to see such things. How hypocritical of me!

"‘I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the kingdom of Heaven.’” Matthew 18:3

What if we were more like kids? Not in the immature or selfish ways kids act at times, but in accepting the “rules” our Father gives us for our good.

What would happen if we watched only what we want our kids to watch? What if we said only the things we allow our kids to say? What if we treated others like we instruct our kids to treat them?

It is time for all of us to take that responsibility for ourselves and our actions. If you wouldn’t do it with a six year old sitting next to you, don’t do it.

  1. What a great way to be more conscious of the choices we make! We can learn so much from children.

  2. Some things that aren't appropriate for children genuinely are OK for adults though!
