Building a Home by Marilyn Nutter

“Look at this,” Kate and Susan said smiling as they walked through the door carrying a huge package.

“We think it will be perfect above your mantel.”

My husband set the framed art on the mantel of our new home. “It’s beautiful!” I said. “What a perfect complement to the chair and wall colors.”

Whether we live in the city or country, a spacious home or a small apartment, an old house or a newly built one, we enjoy enhancing it with lovely décor. But the wisdom of Proverbs tells us that what makes a home beautiful happens among the people inside.

"By wisdom a house is built and though understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." Proverbs 24:3 (NIV)

If you want a home filled with treasures, build and decorate with wisdom, understanding and knowledge. Wisdom causes us to ponder, evaluate and consider, rather than respond impulsively. When we seek to understand, we focus on appreciating another viewpoint. Through knowledge of God’s Word, we begin to think, communicate, and behave with the mind of Christ.

Is your home well decorated? Do you need wisdom? Should you work at cultivating understanding with a family member? Finally, what steps can you take to grow in your knowledge of God and relationship with Him? These rare and beautiful treasures will change the interior design of your home. As perfect complements, they’ll never be outdated.
